Avoiding Airline Baggage Fees

If you've flown on an airplane or booked a flight recently, you've likely noticed all the new fees being implemented regarding baggage. Some airlines, for example, are charging $15 for the first checked bag; $25 for the second. Others impose a $50 fee for bags exceeding 50 pounds. To avoid this added cost, simply exercise a few tips to keep this money in your pocket.

Reserve the middle seat. With cabin space at a premium and a crackdown on carry-ons, you'll need to do more than just pack light. While no one likes to sit in the middle seat, they usually have the most space underneath for storage. That's because the plane's curvature reduces space under window seats while outside seats have condensed space to allow for wider aisles. Visit your airline's website for specific information on the maximum carry-on size allowed underneath the seat.

Board early. Space in the overhead bins goes fast! Suggestion: board as soon as possible. Sure, it's more comfortable to wait in the terminal until the last minute, but you'll pay by finding it difficult to find a place for your bag. If you can't find room, you may have to check it at the gate, which could mean an additional fee.

Ditch the heavy-duty luggage. High-quality craftsmanship may look good, but it weighs the bag down. Cheaper luggage may not last you a lifetime, but it's usually good enough for several trips a year and it almost always weighs less.

With a little savvy, you'll have more money to spend at your destination—not on the plane ride there!
