Need a Newsletter Topic? Never Assume.

When you're searching for articles for your next newsletter, it's easy to hit that Great Wall of Writer's Block. But chances are, there are plenty of newsletter-worthy ideas right in front of you. Literally.

Just look at the various departments within your organization. While most employees probably have a general understanding of how things work, do they know all the finer points? Do they really know what Department "C" does at the other end of the hall, for instance, and all the ways that department assists the rest of the organization? Or do they know all the intricacies of company benefits, such as how to use that flex spending account to its fullest advantage?

Point is, while writing your company newsletter, it's easy to assume most people have adequate knowledge about any given topic. But there are always ways to dig deeper, provide additional details, and to present information in a truthful, positive way that not only further educates, but also has potential to boost morale across your organization.

Are the same questions popping up from your co-workers again and again? Write an explanatory piece answering those questions. Or, highlight a different department every month, write an in-depth profile on one employee within a department, or shine the spotlight on a good deed done outside of work.

At the other end of the idea spectrum, of course, are "processes." Is there a company protocol that might need further explanation? You could use your newsletter to give a step-by-step account on how to follow necessary procedures, or even detail organization-wide deadlines (benefits and insurance changes, for instance).

In summary, all these article ideas circle back to your own curiosity. What do YOU want to know more about? Just as in grade school, chances are if you don't know the full story, others don't either. So tell them. Start by walking the halls. There's something waiting to be explained just a few steps away.
